Background of the Study
The rapid advancements in technology have significantly transformed various industries, including journalism. One of the most notable innovations in recent years is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into news production. AI, broadly defined as the simulation of human intelligence by machines, is increasingly being adopted in newsrooms around the world for tasks such as data analysis, news reporting, fact-checking, and content creation (Diakopoulos, 2019). The integration of AI in journalism has led to what scholars term "automated journalism," where machines assist in producing stories without human intervention (Graefe, 2016).
News production is a critical component of the media industry, responsible for disseminating information to the public. With the increasing demand for timely, accurate, and diverse news, AI has proven to be a useful tool in augmenting the capabilities of newsrooms. From automated writing programs to data-driven journalism, AI technologies are now involved in different stages of news production, including research, content generation, and audience targeting (Carlson, 2020). AI-powered tools can quickly analyze large datasets, which is essential in investigative journalism, fact-checking, and even generating localized news stories at a scale that would be impossible for human journalists alone (Marconi & Siegman, 2020).
In Nigeria, the adoption of AI in media houses is still in its nascent stages. However, there are emerging efforts to incorporate these technologies into newsroom practices, with the goal of improving efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness in news reporting (Agbese, 2021). The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), one of the oldest and largest broadcasting corporations in Africa, has recognized the potential of AI technologies to enhance its operations. NTA Jos, a regional station under the NTA umbrella, serves as a case study for examining how AI technologies are adopted and utilized in news production.
Historically, Nigerian media outlets have faced numerous challenges in news production, ranging from limited resources, outdated infrastructure, and undertrained staff, to operational inefficiencies (Umejei, 2018). As such, the introduction of AI presents an opportunity for newsrooms like NTA Jos to address some of these issues. AI technologies have the potential to revolutionize news production by automating routine tasks, allowing journalists to focus on more complex aspects of reporting, such as investigative journalism and storytelling (Dörr, 2016).
Several studies highlight the benefits of adopting AI in newsrooms, particularly in enhancing the speed and accuracy of news reporting. According to Van Dalen (2017), AI-driven algorithms can generate content with minimal human supervision, allowing media houses to publish breaking news faster than ever before. Moreover, AI tools like natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) are used to analyze trends, detect fake news, and even predict audience preferences, thereby improving content delivery and audience engagement (Linden et al., 2020).
However, there are concerns regarding the implications of AI adoption in newsrooms. One of the primary concerns is the potential displacement of human journalists, as automation replaces certain jobs. Many argue that while AI can perform repetitive tasks, it cannot replace the creativity, critical thinking, and ethical considerations that human journalists bring to the profession (Zhang & Yeo, 2021). Additionally, there are ethical challenges related to transparency, bias in AI algorithms, and accountability in automated news reporting (Diakopoulos & Koliska, 2017).
For NTA Jos, the introduction of AI technologies presents both opportunities and challenges. On the one hand, AI can help the newsroom overcome some of the logistical and operational barriers that have historically hampered news production. On the other hand, the successful adoption of AI will require investments in infrastructure, training, and a critical evaluation of how these technologies align with journalistic values. Therefore, this study seeks to explore how AI technologies are being adopted in NTA Jos newsroom practices, the benefits and challenges of such adoption, and the implications for the future of news production in Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the global rise in the adoption of AI technologies in news production, Nigerian media houses, including NTA Jos, have been slow to embrace these innovations fully. While AI has been proven to enhance news production by automating routine tasks, improving the speed of content delivery, and assisting in investigative reporting, there are challenges that have hindered its widespread adoption in Nigeria. These challenges include inadequate infrastructure, lack of technical expertise, and limited financial resources (Ebeze & Chibuwe, 2019).
Moreover, there is a gap in academic literature examining the specific use of AI technologies in Nigerian media houses, particularly in understanding how these tools are integrated into existing newsroom practices. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating the current state of AI adoption in NTA Jos, the specific AI tools being used, and the perceptions of newsroom staff toward these technologies. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for identifying the factors that hinder or facilitate AI adoption in Nigerian newsrooms and for providing recommendations on how media organizations can leverage AI to improve news production.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The objectives of this study are to:
Identify the AI technologies currently being adopted in NTA Jos newsroom.
Examine how AI technologies are integrated into NTA Jos newsroom practices.
Assess the impact of AI technologies on news production efficiency and quality in NTA Jos.
Explore the perceptions and attitudes of NTA Jos newsroom staff toward AI technologies.
Identify the challenges and opportunities associated with adopting AI technologies in NTA Jos newsroom.
1.4 Research Questions
To achieve the study’s objectives, the following research questions will guide the investigation:
What AI technologies are currently being adopted in NTA Jos newsroom?
How are AI technologies integrated into NTA Jos newsroom practices?
What is the impact of AI technologies on news production efficiency and quality in NTA Jos?
What are the perceptions and attitudes of NTA Jos newsroom staff toward AI technologies?
What challenges and opportunities are associated with adopting AI technologies in NTA Jos newsroom?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
The following hypotheses will be tested in the study:
AI technologies are significantly adopted in NTA Jos newsroom.
The integration of AI technologies in NTA Jos newsroom improves news production efficiency.
AI technologies positively impact the quality of news produced in NTA Jos.
NTA Jos newsroom staff have a positive attitude toward the adoption of AI technologies.
The challenges of adopting AI technologies in NTA Jos newsroom outweigh the opportunities.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study is significant both practically and theoretically. On a practical level, it will provide valuable insights into how AI technologies are being adopted in Nigerian newsrooms, particularly at NTA Jos, one of the country’s most prominent media outlets. Understanding the specific AI tools used, their integration into daily operations, and their impact on news production can guide other media organizations in Nigeria looking to adopt AI technologies. Additionally, the study will highlight the challenges faced by NTA Jos in adopting AI, providing recommendations for overcoming these obstacles. This is particularly important for media houses in Nigeria, which often struggle with limited resources and technological infrastructure.
Theoretically, the study will contribute to the growing body of literature on AI adoption in journalism, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria, where technological advancements often lag behind those of more developed nations. By examining the adoption of AI in the context of Nigerian media, the study will provide a unique perspective on how these technologies are being utilized in a developing economy and how they can be adapted to local contexts. The study will also contribute to theoretical discussions on the role of AI in journalism, particularly in relation to theories of technological determinism and diffusion of innovation. These theories will help explain how and why AI technologies are adopted in newsrooms and the factors that influence their successful integration.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The scope of this study will focus on NTA Jos, specifically its newsroom practices related to news production. While the findings of the study may provide insights into AI adoption in other media organizations in Nigeria, the study is limited to the practices, challenges, and opportunities at NTA Jos. The study will also focus on AI technologies related to content generation, data analysis, and audience engagement, excluding other forms of digital or technological innovations not directly related to AI.
Limitations of the study may include access to internal data from NTA Jos, such as specific AI tools in use and financial constraints limiting AI adoption. Additionally, the study may face challenges in obtaining honest and open responses from staff, as there may be concerns about job security in light of AI automation.
